In ASL, "different" is signed by extending both index fingers, holding them parallel to each other vertically, and moving them apart while twisting the hands in opposite directions. The sign shows two things being separate. This movement is used everywhere in ASL, from friendly chats to serious meetings and presentations. You can change your face and how fast you move to show how different things are. The sign came from the way people naturally show things are not the same, which makes it easy for new learners to pick up and use.
